CONTEXT
AMS SMART OOH, a leader in out-of-home (OOH) advertising in Poland, operates a nationwide network of digital screens located on streets, at bus stops, and inside shopping malls. One of their key services, CityInfo, combined city communication with commercial content, but its system and visual layer had become outdated and ineffective.
AMS approached us to rethink and redesign CityInfo into a modern, flexible and technically robust version, CityInfo 2.0.
PROCESS
We began with an in-situ research phase, experiencing CityInfo screens in real urban conditions. This gave us first-hand insights into usability issues, visibility limitations, and content overload. In parallel, we conducted a benchmark analysis of similar urban communication systems across Europe.
Next, we facilitated co-creation workshops with stakeholders from AMS, product owners, engineers and marketing leads, to align on the challenges, expectations and vision for the new platform. Together we:
- Mapped out the technical constraints and operational requirements
- Identified various user journeys (e.g. commuter, tourist, passer-by)
- Defined a content hierarchy for urban messages, emergency alerts, and advertising
From these findings, we built a design roadmap aligned with AMS’s business and technical goals.
CityInfo 1.0 – before redesign
SOLUTION
We developed a scalable design system for CityInfo 2.0 that could adapt to various screen formats and environments — including vertical, horizontal, and transit shelter displays.
Key components included:
- Modular content layouts: adaptable to information type and screen format
- Clear content rhythm: alternating slots of city information and advertisements in a defined loop (e.g. info > ad > info > ad)
- Responsive grids and typography: ensuring legibility from different distances and angles
- Color-coded content categories: for fast visual parsing (e.g. transport, culture, alerts)
- Motion design system: subtle animations to support content transitions without overwhelming the viewer

SMART CITY,
INFORMED CITIZENS
CityInfo 2.0 is designed to strengthen the connection between the city and its residents. By integrating with municipal data sources, the network delivers real-time transport updates, traffic information, and public safety alerts directly to the streets.
When needed, the system can instantly broadcast emergency messages or weather warnings across the screen network and via Alert RCB, system ensuring critical information reaches everyone, everywhere.
Beyond alerts, CityInfo 2.0 also brings the city’s daily life closer to people: live streams from places like the city zoo or cultural districts remind us that public space is alive, dynamic, and shared. Together, this creates a modern communication ecosystem, transparent, responsive, and built for a truly connected city.
IMPACT
CityInfo 2.0 offers AMS SMART OOH a future-ready platform that improves citizen engagement, content clarity, and operational flexibility, while seamlessly integrating advertising. The system sets a new standard for digital public communication in Polish cities.
